Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Smartphones
Smartphones have become a big part of our daily lives. However, the production of these devices contains many pollutants. Is having the latest model a need or a want? You do not need the latest models of phones, laptops, or other electronics. Some of these can last you up to 10 years and are built to last. Upgrading the model has also become easier with online software updates and hardware upgrades.
I agree, a lot of stuff regarding devices can be easily fixed by yourself if you do some research and if not, can be fixed by someone who specialises in this type of stuff for a pretty reasonable price compared to buying a new phone.
I think that in this day and age, people buy the latest phones more to impress their peers rather than actually needing it, and I think that is very unnecessary and useless.
I remember this quote from a movie, but I can’t quite remember what it was called, it’s a very touching and true quote:
“We buy things we don’t need with money we don’t have to impress people we don’t like”
Modern age society I consider very much narcissistic and self centred, which is quite concerning.
In this day and age it is smarter to buy a phone and use it for many years, however big tech companies such as Apple make it harder to do so through planned obsolescence. Planned obsolescence is when a device is designed to break after a certain quantity of usage. Apple also locks down devices making repair seem very very difficult, and often times it is just cheaper to buy a new device.
I completely agree. Newer phones have the same features that are already present in older models, so even the occasional software update can prove to be unnecessary in terms of practicality. Additionally, companies such as Apple take advantage of consumerism and promote their phones to many just to price their phones at expensive ranges. Nowadays, it’s less about needing a new phone, and more about just wanting the newest model.
