Is having the latest technology a want or a need?
How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?
Wants or Needs? >
Just Keep It
It has become normal to throw away old devices after two or three years, tossing them aside in favor of newer versions of, often, the exact same thing. This is especially common with smartphones, as brands release new phones at a rapid rate. It is important to stop and consider if purchasing a new model of a device is really necessary. Do you truly need the newest technology, or are you just enticed by the idea of something new and exciting, swayed by the marketing? There is also cultural pressure to buy the latest version, as it is often seen as “bad” to have an old model of something. These phones and other devices are polluting the Earth through not only the waste of throwing them away but also through the rapid rate at which they are being produced and the emissions from these factories. People need to use their devices for longer before getting rid of them instead of buying new versions every few years. This will both reduce waste of discarded devices and demand for rapid production, overall decreasing the carbon emissions from these processes.
