Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

Definition of "want" and "need"

Sali.A

The meaning for "want” in the Oxford Dictionary is “have a desire to possess or do (something); wish for,” while the meaning for “need” is “require (something) because it is essential or very important.” Hopefully, you can see the difference already. Buying new devices, for example, is something that is mostly wanted, not needed. Was your device broken or not usable? If yes, then yes, that new device was probably needed. But, if not, then you wanted that new device. According to Columbia climate school, 25% more waste is produced between Thanksgiving and Christmas in the United States because of these excessive purchases. 45% of greenhouse gas emotions come from the manufacturing of these purchases that we buy and use every day. Meaning, buying and engaging in the production of these products will cause more demand for them, which means the production will only continue. That’s why before making a purchase, stop and think: do I really need this?
