In addition to the famous impacts of atmospheric carbon on global warming, there is an equally worrisome effect of carbon dioxide on the oceans: ocean acidification (or OA for short). Here at I2SEA we have a series of resources about OA, including Our Acidifying Ocean, which is an introductory activity and virtual lab (note: now mobile compatible!).
A student suggested that we start a conversation topic about OA, and here it is! Have you heard about Ocean Acidification? If so, are you worried about it? How do you think we can best raise awareness about it among your fellow students and the general public? Have you seen particularly good links or films about OA that you would like to share? What are you doing to address the problem?
Ocean Acidification >
Acid Ocean
Due to the increase in demand of pollution factories, many company saw the vast ocean as a perfect target for them to dumb trash, harmful chemical, and other insanely pollutive items down the ocean. Many people also litter in drains which leads to the ocean too. They all contribute to our ocean's acidic level raising. One day, if we don't stop, the ocean will turn into a skin melting disaster.
As ocean acidification is rising, and it already has an impact on a lot species. The causes of this increase in CO2 has always naturally increased, but it is starting to rise phenomenally rate because of us humans. CO2 is a greenhouse gas, it has become worse because of human activities like burning fossil fuels. When this is happening the calcium in many animals shells are starting to dissolve because of what we are doing to are world and are oceans.
