Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

There are many ways to improve one’s carbon footprint, but the issue with a lot of these solutions is that they’re hard to change. For example, using something other than a car could be tough if the location someone is heading to is far away. If there is a situation where that actually works, then the person should try their best to avoid using cars. There are smaller ways that one can do can go a long way. One could be turning the water off while washing the dishes or brushing their teeth when they don’t need it. It does take a bit of effort, but it’s really helpful in lowering their carbon footprint. Another way that would help would be not using light bulbs during the daytime and instead, using sunlight through windows. Turning off the lights when no one is in the room would also help a lot. These may seem useless to do because they have a small effect, but a small difference is still a difference.
