Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

There are different amounts of CO2 all over the world, because people that live in wealthier countries have more access to cars (that use fossil fuel), and items or products that require a lot of CO2 to produce. They may also have access to more solutions for the high increase of CO2 over the years. This also happens because, if there is a lower population in a country, then there will be less people using things that require CO2. There will be less actions that require CO2. For example, one country that has a low amount of CO2 is Iceland (8003 kg. Laugarvatn, Iceland). A country that has a high amount of CO2 is the United States (20050 kg, California, USA).

I agree. Countries with larger populations can have an impact on carbon footprint in that area and countries with a smaller population can have a much smaller carbon footprint. It also depends on the type of places you live because if you live in a not so populated part of the US but it is a very wealthy area. That area could have a higher carbon footprint because they like to travel a lot and that could mean their transportation could be higher causing a larger carbon footprint in a not so populated place. Personally I live in Maine and the carbon foot print is not so high in Maine because the population is much smaller but there are some places in Maine that bring up the carbon foot print because wealthy grandparents move to Maine when they retire to live in the summer but in the winter they travel to a warmer place like Florida. Overall you have a great point with strong details and I like how you even had an example of what you were talking about.
