Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Foreigner's Footprint

Hi everyone!
I am a Swedish high school student currently studying in the United States for a year, Illinois to be exact.
I have lived here for about 7 months now, 2 to go, and it's been an awesome experience thus far. However, I've had some extreme culture shocks that still amazes me every so often. The unawareness of the American public when it comes to the environment is baffling.
Growing up in a society where you seperate all of your municipal waste - paper, plastic, metal, batteries, even food (!) - it hurts when I see people throw everything in the same bin. Knowing that the electricity that charges my phone every night isn't from a wind turbine but a coal power plant. Knowing that every is expected to have red meat in it. Knowing that my host dad has to drive me to school in a (unnecessarily) big pick up truck to school every day.
I had no idea that there were serious deniers of global warming; that was in my mind a thing of the past.

I'm look ing to see if there's any other foreigners here who are - or have been - abroad for a longer period of time. Have you any similar experiences with the the country you traveled to, or maybe the complete opposite?
