Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint (Mooresville, North Carolina, USA)

mae418

My name is Megan, I am 17 and I am a senior at Mooresville High School in Mooresville, North Carolina, USA. My footprint was relatively high(48,165) compared to the average of my region(15,918).

Transportation : 41,882
Home : 2,897
Food : 3,165
Purchases: 223

The majority of my footprint came from transportation because I have traveled back and forth between Texas and North Carolina to see family during the past year. Traveling for me is almost inevitable. My footprint for my home was pretty low compared to the average(6,148) which didn't surprise me. The AC doesn't run in the whole house hardly ever. It is a two story house and my family is almost always downstairs except when we are sleeping. The food section of my footprint was about average(3,636) which I did expect because my family doesn't eat super organic foods all the time because of how expensive it is. The purchases section of the footprint was extremely low compared to the average(1,950) which was slightly shocking to me. I didn't realize people in my region shopped as much they do. I think this project w as very informative and I enjoyed learning about ways I could help the environment simply by watching the things that I eat and not traveling quite as much as I could. Something I could do to help lower my footprint is to carpool with several other people more often rather than just me and one other person. I could also fly in a plane more often when possible as opposed to driving between North Carolina and Texas so much.
