Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Automobiles and other new inventions make pollution steadily worse. Since the late 1960's people have become alarmed with the danger of pollution.
Air, water, and soil are necessary for existence of all living things. But polluted air can cause illness, and even death. Polluted water kills fish and other marine life. On polluted soil, food can not be grown. In addition environmental pollution spoils the natural beauty of our planet.Pollution is as complicated as serious problem. Automobiles are polluting the air but they provide transportation for the people. Factories pollute the air and the water but they provide jobs for people and produce necessary goods. Fertilizers and pesticides are important for growing crops but they can ruin soil. Thus, people would have to stop using many useful things if they wanted to end pollution immediately. Most people do not want that of course. But pollution can be reduced gradually.

There are new inventions coming from entrepreneurs and even some corporate companies that can be used for cleaning up pollution, and there are scientific discoveries happening every day regarding cleaner fuels, more fuel-efficient cars, and more. The deaths and extinctions don't have to be forever, and by consciously trying to reduce your own personal carbon footprint, you can help reduce the deaths.

Hi, we're form Spain, Menorca, and our footprint is one of the lowest in the world. We could tell you the reasons why it's like that. The first reason is because we live on a small island and we don't have to drive a lot, because all is near. Another thing is that we don't have big malls, there are only shops. Also, the footprint of home and purchases are lower because we think that one day there won't be water, so we have to reduce our consumption. We have the light of the sun, so we don't need to switch on the lights. The problem that increases our footprint is the food, because our mediterranian diet includes a lot of meat. This meat is made in big industries and they emit a lot of harmful gases for the enviroment.

Living in the USA our lifestyle is completely different. Everything is spread out and impossible to reach by foot. If you want something here you need transportation, which is a large part of our impact. Our diets are another impact most Americans consume large amounts of animal products. Most overconsume and eat over 3,000 calories per day, i for one eat around 2,000 or less per day. We have the ability to purchase organic foods but they are way more expensive then the store bought genetically modified foods. It is not fair to those who want to be healthy but cannot afford to because of these conditions in stores. People here do not have the land to grow their own. People here live so close together the land they own is small. Many here want to limit their impact here but it is an uphill battle because everything is so spread out and that challenge is something that seems impossible to change.

Do you think that people in your communities are becoming more aware of making better choices for the environment?
