Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint (Mooresville, North Carolina USA)

440399

Hello, my name is Will and I am from Mooresville, North Carolina in the United States.  My total carbon footprint is 46,725 kgs which is almost double our class average of 24,954 kgs.  I heavily believe that my total is higher because of my transportation number which is 35,957 kgs as compared to the class average of 19,731 kgs.  I have activities I participate in almost everyday after school and I drive to all of this activities wether I am driving myself or riding with another person.  My car also only gets 16mpg (14.7 liters per 100km).  My home total is 6,708 kgs which is higher than the class average of 5,374 kgs. This is because we mainly use tradition incandescent light bulbs in my home and my showers vary from under 5 minutes to up to 15 minutes.  We also keep it around 72˚F (22.2˚C) inside the house year round.  My other two totals for food and purchases were both lower due to the facts that my mother cooks a lot of  meals at home and I recycle packaging whenever I can when I purchase something.  This project has made me undeniably more conscious of what I am do ing in my daily life that is negatively affecting our world.  I have already started to cut back on my driving, setting the thermostat lower, recycling more than I was before, and taking shorter showers.
