Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Overpopulation
In the last few hundred years, the population of the earth has grown exponentially. Families are beginning to have more children, who, with the growth of modern medicine, have a much larger chance of survival. As we develop more ways to cure diseases, stay sanitary, and get vaccinations, population control dwindles creating a fast growth in the population of the world. This is a substantial problem because the earth can only house and feed a certain amount of people. This is also a problem because as technology progresses, the more we feel although we need to acquire and use carbon releasing products in order to feel as though we are a "normal" person in society. Overall, we see as the population grows without strong enough population control, our carbon usage goes through the roof on a personal and global level.
There is no simple way to eradicate this global issue. Although, there are many small things we can do to increase our sustainability, as well as attack this problem from the source. This issue starts with people having an unnecessary amount of children. We c an not prevent everyone from reproducing, but we can start by providing free and available contraception everywhere in the world, and by having more detailed education on the repercussions of unprotected sex. We should make sure that EVERY school teaches how to use contraception, and not just telling children to wait or not have sex. As well, we should be obligated to provide free contraception at schools and in 3rd world countries without any shaming or pressuring to have or not to have sex. These methods will ultimately keep our population more under control, and thus reduce our carbon footprint.
