Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint/ Courtney G. (Mooresville, NC, USA)

899085

My name is Courtney, I am 16 years old and live in Mooresville, North Carolina (USA). After finding all of my information and inserting it into the carbon calculator, I found out that my total carbon footprint was 14,458kgs, my carbon footprint for transportation was 4,147kgs, my home carbon footprint was 5,187kgs, my food was 4,859kgs, and for my purchases my carbon footprint was 265kgs. My overall total, compared to my region was below average, which was 15,918kgs. However, my food carbon footprint was above average compared to my region. The majority of my carbon footprint came from my home, which I was not too surprised about. Overall, I was not very surprised about my findings and my results. I knew that because I participate in good energy saving practices around my house and when I buy new items, I try to be as energy efficient and conservative as possible, my carbon footprint must be lower than average. Although, I was not overall surprised with my results, one thing that surprised me was that most of my carbon footprint came from my house, when I was expecting m ost of my carbon footprint to come from transportation, since I take about three, eight-hour trips to Pennsylvania yearly. I have learned that whatever I do, influences the environment in a big way. I did not realize how much energy could be saved when doing something as simple as turning off the lights after leaving a room, or that the temperature of a room influences my carbon footprint in such a big way. To decrease my carbon footprint, I definitely need to cut down on the length of my showers and to start running the dishwasher ONLY when it is full. Overall, my hypothesis of having a lower carbon footprint than my region was correct.
