Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Madison's Carbon Footprint

madisondbrand

Hi! My name is Madison and I am a student at St. John's River State College in Jacksonville, FL. My carbon footprint was a total of 9,317 of CO2 per year, compared to an average of 13,115 for Florida, United States. As well as, 3,791 Kg worldwide. I am very good with making sure I turn off lights and water when not in use. I also have a composter at my house, and my family and I compost almost everything we can (coffee, egg shells, etc.), as well as recycle everything we use too! We also eat a lot of organic items. We also have solar lights in the backyard as well as the lights in our front yard. We use LED lights all around the house. We have a lot of windows inside my home, so we just use the natural light instead of turning on the lights throughout the house, until night time for a couple hours before going to sleep. We are also looking into growing our own vegetable garden and buying chickens to pick our own eggs. The reason why my carbon footprint was so high is because I drive a lot for school. I drive about 7hrs a week, which is a lot. But, my car has very good mi lage on the highway which is a huge benefit! If I could afford an electric car, I would be all for it! I definitely have spoken to my family about installing solar panels onto our house. The rebates are a bit high for installing solar panels. It is actually a little bit more to pay monthly than just using Clay Electricity. But, my family is still looking into it.

Hi Madison I happen to be a student at St. John's River State College as well. Your numbers were great! It seems you are disciplined in your daily life, and your family as well. As far as composting we use to do this, after reading your post I will try and be more mindful of doing this again. Great post thanks for sharing ways to improve our footprint calculations.
