Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Transportation Excess
My transportation footprint was off the charts in comparison to the average transportation footprint. I realized that carpooling and the various environmentally clean methods of transportation is significantly helpful if performed consistently. These methods have been out in the public and made clear for years now, but I believe that the average persons' carbon footprint is increasing due to lack of sense of urgency and not the lack of knowledge. Many people know at least a minimal amount about the environmental issues occurring, but they are not understanding the magnitude of the effects of these issues. In addition, I noticed that my flights really spiked up my footprint and I considered myself as a non-consistent flyer. I can only imagine the footprints of others who constantly use airplanes to travel across the world. Overall, I believe that people, including myself, should become more consistent in decreasing our carbon footprint through persistent reminders of the consequences that can concur from ignoring environmental issues.
I agree- I admit myself that I've known of these alternatives but have been too lazy to use them. We should do our best to create awareness especially to the gravity of the issue that is climate change. I think that we, as Americans, need to get over our tendency of laziness. Climate change is something that is happening right now and cannot be put off to deal with later. We need to get our act together as a country to make changes instead of continuing our lazy ways.
It is important to acknowledge that your quantity of excess according to the transportation is in corresponding to where you live. I come from Guatemala and public transportation is very unsafe. It is ignorant to say that everyone has access to safe, fast, clean and effective transportation. This is why developed nations, and their individuals must carry the lack of transport from developing nations and bring their advances to these to work together to decrease co2 emissions.
I also had an outrageous amount in my transportation footprint, and compared to the average transportation footprint in my country, I exceeded the number to much. I believe that carpooling is not a very good solution to all, because some people, like me, have very specific and tight schedules that they need to follow, and carpooling is not an option. A solution that I have tried to follow is that, by downloading certain programs in your smartphone, one can know the shortest, safest and most efficient routes there are in Guatemala. With that information, one can follow the shortest road, wasting the least amount of fuel, and producing the least amounts of emissions one can do in a day.
I am also from Guatemala and as I was competing the assignment I thought my transportation footprint was going to be the same as the average person in the world, but it was actually way higher. I was extremely surprised, I had no idea that my daily activities would leave such large footprint on the environment.
Although I do use carpooling as a method of helping the environment, I live in a nation where people live spread apart and it is difficult to carpool since everyone also have different activities after school. I would use my bike if my country was safe enough to do so, but by the time being, I will have to stick to using my car. However, I have an Ecologic Honda that wastes much less than the average car so that is helping with my transportation footprint.
My transportation emission footprint was also incredibly high compared to the average emission in Guatemala. I couldn't believe that my use of cars greatly affects the environment and very simple solutions could be applied to my life. Such as carpooling, and using safe public transportation. It is important to look for alternative ways to move around to reduce your carbon footprint. -Guatemala
