Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

I noticed many differences across the globe. Different places of the world have different resources which I think is the main reason for the strong changes. Someone in America is going to have a different day to day life than a student who lives in Russia, or a student who lives in Kenya. In the U.S., there is such a heavy reliance on the use of technology and automobiles, just because that is how we are raised and it would be very difficult to get through our day to day life without the use of those tools. But a student in Kenya doesn't have access or the necessity of those types of tools where they live. They have a different lifestyle, one that does not require the constant need for technology, so therefore their carbon footprint will be lower because they are not using a car every day, they aren't watching TV everyday.

I actually noticed this as well when I was doing my footprint survey. I am from Guatemala city and it is not a safe place to walk from place to place or even take public transportation. I have to drive everywhere, every day so that affected my final result. If I choose to go to college in Boston, my carbon footprint will reduce drastically because I would be walking everywhere instead of driving and I would be using public transportation to move to places farther apart.

When it came to your carbon footprint I thought that it didn't really matter where you lived but it actually is important. Things such as how your country manages certain carbon emission aspects is very important and especially when it is compared to the average of each country. Guatemala
