Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My highest use of carbon was for transportation which surprises me because my family only owns one car which I have only ridden in a handful of times over the past year. I mainly take taxis or the school bus to get around ghana. The reason my transportation footprint is so high is from taking planes all summer to visit family and friends. To reduce my footprint I will try harder to walk places when possible. I was most surprised to see that I use less carbon for food than Ghanians do. I only use about 598 kg whereas the average in my country is 883 kg. That is the only area where they out weigh me though and I am not surprised about that. Because ghana is such a poor country the people here cannot afford the same luxuries like air conditioning, running water, or even owning a car, like I can. So it would make sense that I use more carbon than they do because they simply just cannot afford it.

It might be interesting to note, that while you are living in Ghana, you are an 'expat' from the U.S.
