Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Transportation Carbon Footprint
After comparing my transportation footprint to the average, I realized that I am driving way too often. Although I drive a prius, I still need to be more conscious of how often I drive places when I can easily take public transportation. The bay area has one of the best public transportation systems and unfortunately I have been too lazy to take advantage of it. It is really easy to leave a big carbon footprint because we are so accustomed to convenience and being places/ getting things quickly.
It is quite alarming that most of this footprint comes from flights. This makes me wonder if there have been advances in finding more eco-friendly alternatives than aviation fuel. The amount of flights around the world everyday and cars being driven overall should be cut down or forced to use eco-friendly fuel in order to reduce the world's carbon footprint.
This is why developed nations, and their individuals must carry the lack of transport from developing nations and bring their advances to these to work together to decrease co2 emissions.
I am from Guatemala and I also found that the amount of time that I spent in a car exceeds the amount that the average person spends in one. The traffic in this country is horrible, there are more cars in Guatemala than the amount that can fit in the streets. This increases the amount of time each car runs for every time a person goes out. If the people of the country come up with a solution such as car pooling, then our transportation footprint might decrease.
My country is in much need of a good, public transportation that doesn't create so much waste. W [2637](//muut.com/u/footprint/s1/:footprint:ykGc:2637.jpg.jpg) This is the public transportation that most people use (people from a low economic class) in Guatemala, and as you can see in the picture, it produces a lot of air pollution and no one in the government is doing anything about it.
Global warming is rapidly increasing, mainly due to human activities. Our carbon footprints are way too high, causing high levels of carbon dioxide to be emitted into the atmosphere. By increasing our amount of coal and gas use in the past 150 years, the climate of the earth has changed drastically. The act of burning coal, natural gas, and gasoline for cars, trains, ships, and planes is a major factor that contributes to the problem of global warming. This alone has a big impact on our carbon footprints. The amount of time we spend in our cars is atrocious. People used to walk or bike to where they needed to go. Nowadays, cars are used to go everywhere. Even if the trip would only be a ten minute walk or bike ride, many humans still choose to drive, simply because it is five minutes faster. This is unacceptable.
A large portion of our carbon footprints can be cut down by driving less often. This will help slow down global warming, and make the earth better in the future. It’s important to walk or bike whenever you can. Even taking out a ten minute drive to school every day can have a big impact. It can decrease your carbon footprint and the amount of carbon dioxide that is escapes into the atmosphere. Not only that, but it is also beneficial for your health. Getting out of the house and walking or biking can jumpstart your day with energy. You can become much more fit, and feel a lot better as well.
