Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

California Drought Due to Air Quality?

garrettlmeredith

Where we are in California we have been in a drought for about six years. We have had to preserve water as much as we can by doing a whole bunch of different things. It started with not being able to water our lawns. Then it moved onto more important things like showers and any kind of outside water. Some people started getting re-filtered water for their plants and anything else that wouldn’t be ingested. It’s hard to not be able to do stuff on a green soft lawn instead we have to do stuff on our yellow lawns. Of course there are the people who don’t care much about the drought and ignore the restrictions and go on as they normally would.
The main reason we have a large carbon footprint in California is due to our electricity. According to the Bay Area Air Quality Management District the area that we live in, near San Francisco, there is good air quality with a rating of 46. Compared to silicone valley which has a rating of 63. They have a higher rating due to their electricity use in the tech industry.
The reason I’m talking about our drought is because the  drought is coming from our carbon footprint. In California we have a bigger carbon footprint than a lot of other places in the United States and this could be a main reason for our drought. People say that the global warming around our area could dry out the climate, which relates to the problem that we’re having. With the rain being taken away it is very hard to go back to the normal life in California. I would like to know how climate change is affecting you in your area. Thanks!
