Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Need to Spend Less Time in My Car

marianaalvear

I definitely seem to have well above the average footprint due to transportation. Like Drew mentioned, it appears to me that the amount of plane rides that I have been on has had a huge impact on my carbon footprint. In order to reduce my footprint, I might take less trips to the East Coast as well as carpool with my friends to and from school.
The carbon footprint of those who live in Europe seems to be considerably less than those of other countries. I believe that this is due to the fact that the countries in Europe tend to have smaller homes as well as the reality that countries are closer together, requiring less transportation.

I didn't realize that European countries had less of a carbon footprint. I guess this makes sense, because apart from being closer together European countries are also very progressive and have a lot of awareness about climate change. The policies they have in place are very environmentally friendly. Germany has many progressive policies and has over half of their power produced by renewable energy.

I live in Guatemala and I consider myself in a higher economic state than the average person. I also used 1,700 kgs of CO2 a year only on transportation. I take the bus everyday for school but I also have a personal vehicle to travel from place to place. The average in my region is 456 kgs CO2, which is 1/4 of the CO2 I use. I believe that the higher class in my region have a much higher footprint than the average since we have more money to spend on resources than the average person.

My carbon footprint is way higher than the average footprint and it is mostly due to transportation. I live in Guatemala an I spend many hours a day in a car or bus due to traffic. I agree with marainaalevear because I need to spend less time in a car. Due to violence and bad security in Guatemala it is very hard to find another mean of transportation that does not involve cars. Bicycle and walking is very rare here and I don't think I could go to school this way. I will start to use the bus more often to stop producing excess carbon.

Michelle, you bring up a very interesting point. I have not previously considered the safety issue when it comes to transportation. I live in Oakland, where crime rates are very high compared to the rest of the United States. In order to prevent biking or walking through dangerous areas, many people take the bus. There are busses in London, for example, that are either electric or hybrid. The American Public Transportation System  saves 1.4 billion gallons of gas annually. This gives me hope about the future with even more eco-friendly buses. I can only imagine the amount of CO2 emissions that could be decreased with the increased use of buses and the advancement in transportation technology.
