Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

On Earth there are over one billion vehicles that emit 1.73 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere every year. That’s equal to burning all the coal in a fully-loaded train that wraps twelve times around Earth! In the US there are cars for about every 1.3 people, and in China there are about 6.75 people to every car.
Some ways to save Co2 emissions from your vehicle are to accelerate slowly, drive the speed limit, maintain your speeds and anticipate stopping and starting (don’t slam on brakes/gas). Keeping your tires properly inflated can also help reduce up to 700 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere each year. Maintaining your car by replacing oil, air and fuel filters can also help.
These are all helpful ways to reduce CO2 emissions from your vehicle into the atmosphere. Driving less and walking more can help save our planet!

I agree that an important way to reduce Co2 emissions is to cut down on our vehicle use, or to make our vehicles more efficient. According to the Union of Concerned Scientists, within the United States, cars and trucks alone make up one fifth of our emissions because one gallon of gas releases about 24 pounds of Co2 and other greenhouse gases. There are ways that can help save fuel other than the ones that you listed. For instance, fuel efficient vehicles like Prius' or electric vehicles like Tesla can be used to reduce the amount of fuel consumption. Furthermore, there are cleaner fuels that can be burned to make energy like cellulosic biofuels that have 80% fewer emissions than gasoline. Regulations of gasoline or cars can be the first steps to approaching a more environmentally friendly world.
