Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Importance of Reducing, reusing and recycling

tylerwoods

Reducing, reusing, and recycling are all very good ways to eliminate waste. By recycling we can make new items out of old ones without wasting them. By reducing waste we don't pollute the Earth and make earth a more sustainable place. By reusing items we don't waste them and we find innovating ways to use the items again.

I completely agree with this. Pollution has a wide impact on the earth and health in general. Pollution is also very terrible for the earth because it effects human health. Something I think that is very important to be aware of is the wide ranging health impacts on humans. Air pollution or ozone, a type of toxin let out in the air with greenhouse gases are used,  is something that can lead to diminished lung function. This ha also increased the number of patients being admitted into emergency rooms and hospitals for asthma problems. This can all lead to premature deaths. Wildfires are also something that can happen when more air is polluted. These wildfires cause  high temperatures that lead to droughts. Because we live in california, we know how hard a drought is on society and everyday life. The wildfires also let out other types of gases like carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and other organic compounds. These reduce the quality of the air.
Climate change also leads to shifts in flowering time because of the warmer weather. This means that more pollen is let out into  the air from allergenic plants. Long pollen seasons can increase allergies and asthma episodes. Asthma and allergies will diminish work and school days. The percentage of people diagnosed with asthma have increased by 1.1% from 2001 to 2010 nationwide. Patients and doctors will start to encounter serious problems and challenges in allergy and asthma control. Thi is why have to decrease our carbon footprint because it will start to decrease the human population.
