Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Food, Waste, and Carbon

marcoruffinelli

Food is wasted on a daily basis, almost thirty to forty percent of the United State’s food production is wasted annually. According to the UNEP and the World Resources Institute, every year the industrialized world wastes (222 million tons) almost as much as the sub-Saharan Africa region produces (230 million tons). In the United States organic waste dominates landfills, being the second most common in landfills. This organic waste accumulates and makes one of the largest sources of methane gas, which is a greenhouse gas. In September of 2015, the EPA announced the first national food reduction goal. By the year 2030 the EPA calls for a goal of fifty percent reduction in organic waste.
To reduce waste nationally and even globally more people must think and “eye out” how much they actually need to buy, consume, and throw away. In the ISCFC calculations my carbon emissions from my food consumption turned out to be the second highest, and was almost double that of my region. In order for myself to reduce this appreciable amount, I would definitely need to consume more appro priately: less red meats, more vegetables and fruits, less dairy, and cut out most of my processed foods. Although there are set goals made by governments and myself, I would also have to be realistic. A lot of the food purchased does not come down to my decisions, but rather my family’s income and choices.
