Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

How Climate Change is Affecting Our World

mattmp2001

Ever since 2000, the record of the warmest years have occurred, 2015 in fact had the record of having the warmest year. Also during these past 16 years, there have been many events of natural disasters like hurricanes and floods. The cause of these weather events and warmth on Earth is because of the pollution from burning fossil fuels. One big consequence of this pollution include the melting of polar ice caps, which is directly caused by the increase of heat. The melting of the ice caps is also causing sea levels to rise in the Earth’s vast oceans. Since these ice caps are made of fresh water, the fresh water is going into the ocean, causing there to be less salt content, which is dangerous to species that are used to the salinity of the ocean. Increasing sea levels can have devastating effects on the coasts. It can cause erosion, flooding, and the loss of habitats for living things.

Rising heat levels on Earth’s surface is also increasing the number of wildfires that occur. California, for example had the second most wildfires in 2015, with 8,745 fires in just y ear. Not every one of these fires were directly caused by climate change, but it is a contributing  factor. Climate change also brings droughts to regions like California, causing there to be less water for the environment. Since the environment didn’t get much water, it became dry and very flammable. The dry material is fuel for the fire to burn, causing there to be many acres of land to be burnt down.

Climate change is a very concerning issue when discussing about our future as a society, and the present. We can’t change the fact that us humans cause climate change, but we can reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions. If we as a society go green and use more environmentally friendly products, then we can help prevent even worse consequences for our future.

Greener fuel

Toxic fuels and waste get thrown into our environment more and more everyday. These harmful gasses are ruining our Ozone layer and the natural life around us. This is a well know issue but not enough people make a difference to do anything. We need to take action by implementing more and more green things.
This problem is only getting worse from humans and their toxic waste. Cars with their huge gas engines are a huge part of this. We need more companies and people to purchase hybrid and electric cars. Gas from cars is a major contribution to our co2 emissions so a cleaner car means a cleaner life. This is already starting to effecting our sea levels which is life threatening to many people. Another horrible issue is the oil industry, It's getting bigger and has a huge effect on the environment. With this being said most of the major countries such as China, the USA, and Russia have huge factories and an innumerable amount of cars on the road.
We need these massive countries to make big ch anges from the core. And even possibly working together to provide energy efficient resources to people who need them. This is a must and we are getting no where without it.
