Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Global warming

miccraig

Global warming is a topic that a lot of people know but do not truly understand. I feel most when they hear about global warming think we can’t help it and there’s nothing we can do to stop global warming. While that statement may be partially true we can slow the effects of global warming.
We can slow these effects in many ways like taking less public transportation and using less electricity. People with higher income could probably afford solar panels on their homes. People with lower budgets can conserve power by unplugging  their phone charger from the wall when they aren’t using it this also applies to laptops, tablets, etc. To add on you can turn off the power supply on your computer in the back when u aren’t using it to save power.
These example are few of the many that are available you can decrease your carbon footprint in other ways besides preserving gas and electricity. You can change the foods you eat and how much you go shopping as well. In conclusion there are many ways to slow our inevitable defeat, but the way you way you go about this task is what tr uly matters.

I totally agree with you. Global warming is definitely a cause that needs to be acted upon today. It is affecting us immensely and even though we can't feel it is is melting our earth and affecting the ozone layer with green house gases.

Causes: Over the last 150 years the earth’s overall temperature has grown significantly, which is leading to many negative effects all over the world. One major effect of the rising temperature is glacier melting. Glaciers are large sheets of snow and ice found mainly in Alaska and European and Asian mountains, but also in many other places around the world. They have been melting for over 50 years now, as the global temperature continues to climb. It has become more concerning recently as the rate of melting has increased dramatically. Soon brought some glaciers will disappear completely and the ones left will continue to melt.
The reason that this can be concerning is once glaciers start to melt, the leftover water causes the sea level to rise significantly which can cause all sorts of other problems on its own. The sea level rising is problematic because hundreds of millions of people live in coastal and low lying cities and towns. These major cities can easily become flooded as glacier s keep melting faster and faster. Which would leave millions of people without places to live. Another concern is the erosion and damage the rising ocean can have. Over time it can wear away at beaches and islands and sometimes even completely destroy them. This new sea level can add to more dangerous storms closer inland as the coastal cities are wiped out.
Solutions: The number one cause of glaciers melting is global warming. Global warming is the emission of greenhouse gases such as Co2. With more Co2 in the atmosphere, the sun’s rays get through easier. The sun’s rays make the Earth hotter, melting glaciers. So how can we stop this. The co2 emitted comes from lights, cars, and manufacturing. People should buy used clothes at a thrift shop instead of buying new clothes at a store. People should turn lights off when they aren’t in the room or don’t need them. And finally, carpooling, electric cars, and public transportation is a way to solve the massive amounts of carbon emitted each day.
The most co2 emitted though is from burning fossil fuels. Fossil fuels are natural resources such as coal, oil (including gasoline and diesel fuel) and natural gas. It is formed from ancient plants and animals. Fossil fuels power vehicles, AC, and other appliances so a switch to a more environmentally fuel could literally change the world. Many alternatives include; biodiesel, bioalcohol, chemically stored electricity, hydrogen, non-fossil methane, non-fossil natural gas, vegetable oil, and propane. Many of these alternatives are being used but are almost useless unless we completely transfer from fossil fuel to alternative. These alternatives can make the difference between life and death.

I am from Guatemala and I strongly agree with your argument. I believe that many people aren't aware of all of the causes of global warming and every day we contribute to the increase of global warming and climate change. I believe that as of today, there is not possible cause of global warming but as a community, we should work to reduce our carbon footprint in our daily activities. If is affecting us as humans directly, because everyday the Earth's temperature is increasing and the malnutrition in poor areas is becoming a great problem. Additionally, the animals who live in the polar areas are dying because of the melting glaciers.
