Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Carbon Carbon Carbon
I do think there are differences in carbon footprints of schools across the globe. Some of the greatest carbon footprint means come from schools in the Americas (U.S., Central, and South America) and China. For example, the U.S. has larger carbon footprints because of the emphasis on consumerism. Our society is based on capitalism which supports the constant amass of materials. The media also plays a large role in promoting the consumption of manufactured goods through ads and commercials. The U.S. also largely relies on cars and planes for transportation which emit large amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as of 2014 30% of greenhouse gas emissions comes from electricity, 26% come from transportation, 21% come from industry, 12% come from commercial and residential, and 9% come from agriculture. The largest contributor to greenhouse gas emissions from human activity is from burning fossil fuels. The countries that have lower carbon footprints are most likely less industrialized, have alternative means of transportation that are more carbon efficient, or put less importance on the purchase of clothes, technology, and other goods.
In order to reduce my carbon footprint I would have to take less flights and drive less often. This year I did a lot of flying for college visits, family trips, and a bio summer camp. I also drove a lot for soccer and volunteering. Now that I know the number of my transportation carbon production I will be more conscious of how I get to and from places. I will try to drive less, or at least carpool as much as possible, and walk or take public transportation more. These adjustments to my daily life are very reasonable and can be integrated rather quickly.
