Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Is Flying the Best Form of Transportation?

melissaluc

Before calculating my carbon footprint, I thought most of my CO2 emissions would be because I drive to school everyday. However, to my surprise, it was flying that put me way above average for my carbon footprint for transportation. In fact, one air mile produces about 53.3 pounds of carbon dioxide, so a flight from New York to Los Angeles would produce over 65 tons (http://blueskymodel.org/air-mile). I had never really thought about how big of an impact air travel had on the environment until I calculated it. I just thought that flying was the fastest and most efficient way of getting where I needed to go. In reality, the amount of time of checking in bags and going through security at the airport takes up a lot of time that I could have spent already with other forms of transportation. Some better alternatives would be driving and by taking the train, which both produce less CO2 emissions. Although in some instances, my only option is to fly because I am going o ver seas, seeing how much my air travel affects my carbon footprint inspires me to travel in more environmentally friendly ways.
