Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Public Transportation and How it Decreases Your Carbon Footprint

dm2002

Public transportation has many benefits including reducing energy consumption and harmful carbon dioxide emissions that damage the environment. Compared to traveling by means of a private vehicle, public transportation uses less energy and produces less pollution. If you use public transportation more often, you can reduce your carbon footprint as well. For example, a single person traveling by car who switched a 20 mile trip to public transportation, could reduce his or her annual carbon dioxide emissions by 4,800 pounds per year, which is the same as a 10% reduction in all greenhouse gases produced by an ordinary two-adult, two-car household. The elimination of private vehicle traveling and switching to public transportation, can lead to the saving of up to 30% of carbon dioxide emissions can be accomplished. Another way public transportation helps the economy is that it gives us the option of making energy efficient choices. As I stated earlier, public transportation reduces overall greenhouse gas emissions, and it does so without lessening the mobility so crucial to  our nation's economic health and the quality of our citizens' lives. Moreover, the cost of fuel is rising, which is causing traveling by a private vehicle to be more prohibitive for families. Households who use public transportation save an average of $6,251 per year. All in all, public transportation is a benefactor of the environment, helps to reduce your footprint in many ways, and can lead to less money out of your paycheck.
