Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Are jeans destroying our environment?

Obie

Most of us try to be considerate to our environment when we make our purchases. For example, instead of spending money on plastic water bottles at the store, people are now going more for reusable bottles because we are more aware that plastic water bottle really affect our earth. But do you think about what types of pants are a common cause in wastage of our environment? Large jean producers like Levi’s have admitted to using approximately 1,800 gallons of water in order to make ONE pair of jeans. The average human owns about 7-10 pairs of jeans. Sources say that on average 450 million pairs of jeans are sold each year. That's a lot of water! Most are very unaware that simple objects can be wasting our resources. The studies on this have definitely changed my perspective. I believe because of this factor, many carbon footprints should be raised in order to get more accurate results. Will you think twice about spending money on jeans that are hurting the environment?
