Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint

After looking at schools from around the globe and comparing them to my own, I noticed some differences and trends.  I saw that there was a disparity between schools located in more advanced and developed countries than in countries that are poorer.   I think this is self explanatory, due to the fact that there are more ways to increase your carbon footprint in a developed area, from cars, to other specific materials, to airplane flights and many other things.  In daily life there are many things that people in technologically advanced areas use, and all of these build together to form an even greater carbon footprint.  In less developed areas, there are less of these tools, resulting in a lower carbon footprint.  That was the major trend/difference that I noticed from different schools across the globe.

Personally, after looking at my own footprint, I will definitely use the calculator as a resource to determining how to lower the level of my footprint.  I didn't specifically use the calculator to mirror the footprint of a different school.  I know that I would need to  make changes to my transportation.  After looking at my footprint, I could tell that it was the airplane flights that I'd taken raised the level substantially.  In my everyday life, I am going to look towards walking, biking, carpooling, or using public transportation while also recycling more and eating more organic.  I am also going to change my light-bulbs to LEDs, and maybe looking towards shifting to an eco-friendly power source such as solar sometime in the future.
