Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Africa, a technological dump.

Do you know where there go our our mobiles, microwave, washers or other electronic devices when we them throw at the garbage?. Places exist in the world where all this technological garbage is accumulated for years. One year ago I saw a video that it was speaking about it and it impressed me. Places like Accra (Ghana) are very contaminated by the technological rubbish that the most advanced countries have used. In Accra there has been detected pollution by lead, cadmium and other metals that cause an effect harmful to the human health. According to the ' Green Cross Switzerland ' and the 'Blacksmith Institute' this dust-bin places between 10 places most contaminated with the Earth; where also it's possible to find Chernobyl. It's seems to me very sad and I think that we should take care of our planet and consider that some day we can destroyed completely if we don't change our mentality.

right, and many poor people in those locations are exposed to high levels of toxic components from disposed technological devices as they pull out parts that can be reused.

It is much better to use your devices for as long as you are able, pass them off to someone else (like your younger sibling?) if you really need a new one, and once they no longer work, make sure they are recycled responsibly if possible.
