Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Hello from Croatia!

barbarabonjak

Hello everyone!
My name is Barbara and I'm 17 years old. I come from a small town in Croatia, named Požega. My total carbon footprint is 4080 kgs of CO2 per year which is less then an average footprint for Croatia (5736 kgs). I'm very proud of myself and my family, but I think I can reduce it even more. I've chosen to participate in this because I think we should learn about what do we do to this planet per year and what all of us can do to help our world and nature heal and get better. Knowing that young people like me actually see problems and want to act is woderful.
I am a person who loves being outside in a forest where I can enjoy peace and the beauty that mother nature gave us.
I'm trying to persuade my parents to start eating more organic food and cut back meat, but it's very hard, especially for my father big_smile
However, I do try my best to avoid plastic packaging, eat home grown food and walk instead of going somewhere with my car.  Feel free to leave a reply and give me some advice on how to reduce my carbon footprint smile

Hi Barbara - yes changing ones diet can be difficult, especially for people like your father who have eaten a certain way for their whole lives.  The best approach may be to start small.  See if you can convince your father to accept one meal a week that doesn't have meat - many people in the USA do this on Monday, and call it "Meatless Monday".

This could be easier for your father to accept because it is planned (he won't be disappointed with a surprise of a meatless meal).  Monday is also a good day for this in many places in the USA because we often have farmer's markets on the weekend, so you can choose the freshest, in-season vegetables to use in the Monday meal.

Who else has ideas for Barbara to lower her already low footprint even more?

Hey Jason - thank you for your reply smile We also have a similar 'meatless tradition' especially before big Catholic holidays like Christmas and Easter. But in my family we don't eat meat on Fridays which is also connected to our religion. No matter what, this project will certainly help me and my family to change our lifestyles for the better.

Honestly, I think it's incredible that your footprint is so small! My family has a 28, 896 kg footprint, and transportation is a huge part of it (17,867 kg to be exact). I really love the planet and nature, as well as reduce my footprint. Are there things you could recommend to someone with a big footprint like me?

Transportation is very important for your carbon footprint. I live in the centre of Požega and everything is near me so i can go anywhere by foot or my bicycle. I have a few advices for you: turn off the light every time you leave the room, stop using so much plastic, don't throw trash on the streets, plant vegetables and fruit...
