Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Hello from Croatia

vpetra6

Hello everyone.
My name is Petra, I'm 17 years old and I come from a small town in Croatia, named Požega. My total carbon footprint is 3593 kgs of CO2 per year. But to be honest, it should be more, since I didn't know every answer tongue I chose to participate in this because I think we should learn about what only one person does to this planet per year and what all of us can do to help our world and nature heal and get better.
I am a person who loves being out and I prefer walking to forcing my parents to drive me somewhere. Also, my family and I always recycle paper, glass, plastic etc.
I'm trying to persuade my parents to start eating more organic food and cut back meat.
I wouldn't mind if someone replied and suggested how I could reduce my carbon footprint more smile

hey I'm from miami USA, does your city use solar panels ? thats one way instead of using electricity, also hybrid cars. The cutting down of meat is a good idea, meat is a BIG issue for a lot of reasons even CO2.

vpetra6

Hey smile well our city does not use solar panels which I think is sad. Thats way better than using electricity, I agree. I also agree with cutting down on meat, but you know how it goes tongue Thank you for leaving a reply to my post and thank you for the suggestions smile

Perhaps you can suggest to your parents one day per week to cut down on meat.  Many families in the US are trying "meatless mondays", which is often a good day to do this, since there are farmer's markets in many towns on the weekends with the freshest available local produce.  You can then plan your monday meal from those ingredients.  It's fun!

vpetra6

I've heard about "meatless mondays" but never really thought about persuading it. Thank you very much for your suggestion. I will definitely recommend this to my family smile

Hi Petra! my name is Brandy I am from the U.S. and after taking this test I have found out that my familys carbon usage is way higher than the average usage should be, I know ti is mostly because we do a lot of air travel but I would definitely like to reduce this number. I was vegiatrian for a few weeks and it was very hard for me because so many people in my family eat meat every day so I decided to try it when I am providing for myself. I am glad you ahve found motivation from this calculator as I have too! Thank you for being interested in the well being of out world.

vpetra6

Hey Brandi smile it is easier for me to walk more because I live in a small town, so my travelling is mostly walking tongue I think it is definitely hard to become a vegeterian when your whole family eats meat. I could suggest you starting small by not eating meat once or twice a week, it would certainly be helpful when becoming a vegeterian. Yes, I am motivated a lot by this project and I think it is a BIG thing cutting down our carbon footprint. I hope we will be able to initiate other people and show them how important it is to care about our planet. Thank you a lot for your reply smile

sierrabeatty

Hi Petra! My name is Sierra and I live in the US in a state called Oregon. I found that my footprint is a little higher than the average for my area. I think this is because I have to drive myself to school and sports practice and it is too far to walk! However, my family is big on recycling and trying not to waster energy at home. I loved reading your story about your carbon footprint!

vpetra6

Hey Sierra! Yes, that's a big problem in big cities but if that's the sollution, what can you do. It's a good thing to recycle, My family and I have been recyling for years now. For example, we collect bottles we use and then my dad and I give them for recycling at our supermarket. Feels good when you know you're helping. Thank you for your reply and hopefully we will succeed to cut down our carbon footprint. smile

paigeedberg

Hello Petra! I am from the US in the same state as Brandy and Sierra. Although my family travels a lot and usually uses a lot of electricity, we do compost and recycle. Even with recycling, composting, and cutting down on our electricity use, our carbon footprint is still extremely large because of other factors such as transportation and the food we eat. I liked your response about "meatless mondays" and I would consider it if it would lower my carbon footprint! Any other suggestions on food consumption, electricity, or transportation that could help? I would love to hear from you and your opinions on CO2 emissions!
Thank you!

paigeedberg

I think that walking, recycling and buying organic foods would be a great option for reducing your carbon footprint! Have you tried growing your own food in a backyard garden? I think that your carbon footprint is still very low compared to mine! Do you spend a lot of money per month on goods (groceries, clothing, etc)?

Hey everyone! I think my carbon footprint was much higher than I expected because I really didn't realize how much energy all the devices in my house take up! Even though I do use public transportation and try to consume (food, fashion etc) ethically and efficiently, I need to find more ways to reduce my footprint at my home (i.e unplugging and turning things completely off). After this survey I will definitely be taking shorter showers!
