Upon calculating my carbon footprint I was surprised by carbon use. I used to think that I had a relatively low carbon foot print, but upon seeing my result I can see that I was incorrect in this assumption. I am above the average human from California and even above the average the human. For one my transportation was extremely high at 15328 kgs. This was extremely high compared to my region; it was mostly due to the multiple airplane flights I took that year. The contrast in carbon usage of my area and my usage shows how diverse Oakland California is. In Oakland we have people of all economic positions. These economic positions definitely affect the amounts of carbon use. Generally speaking those in a higher economic class use more carbon than those in lower economic class. In a CNN article Rich, Poor and Climate Change, reporter Rachel Oliver writes, “The average American's annual carbon footprint -- 20.4 tons -- is around 2,000 times that of someone living in the African nation of Chad. And the average Briton will emit as much carbon dioxide (C02) in one day as a Ken yan will in an entire year”(par. 3) The American carbon footprint per capita is far higher than those of in poverty stricken countries. The use of carbon can cause both natural disasters and medical issues; thus the need to watch carbon usage is imperative.
