Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

An Oakland Students Carbon Footprint

juninho1035

When I calculated my carbon footprint, I was extremely surprised and shocked by my results. All of my categories were below the regional average except food. The regional average for food was 2223 kgs while my total was 3638 kgs. After seeing that my food footprint was almost 2 times larger than the average, I became aware of how easy it is to exceed our carbon impact. At first, I assumed that my own carbon footprint was irrelevant to the billions of footprints around. Yet once I calculated my carbon impact, I realized that every small action counts, especially knowing that eating a lot especially in the year I have been in, still has a big impact. I noticed that if used my transportation from the year before, I would've probably had 3 times than the average. For me the one thing I was most surprised about was that a difference in a carbon footprint is made depending upon whether one eats organic or bioengineered fruits. Which I would of been better if I noticed before. For the last statement, I learned that each step it took to produce these fruits contributed more carb on into our atmosphere. I guess at the end by realizing the numerous sources of carbon dioxide, I have learned to be much more conscious of my own actions, especially through the help of the footprint, that I can reduce carbon emissions.
