Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Electricity

lilalevert

Each day we waste energy by leaving things on. It is so simple just to turn a few lights and appliances off. Not only is this hurting the environment but it is also hurting your electricity bills. Turning things off helps you save money and electricity.

I agree with this, but most of the time that you leave something on it is because you forgot to turn it off. I think that to minimize this people should install lights that are either motion sensing, or on a timer.

I agree. We can reduce our carbon footprint if we turn the lights off when leaving our home, or not using electronics 24/7. It's a really good idea to having motion sensored lights because most people need to be reminded to turn lights off

i agree that leaving lights on is extremely bad for the environment and also very wasteful. I would add that leaving chargers or other things plugged in during the day is another way that we waste energy without noticing. People should learn to turn appliances off and unplug them when we are not using them.

Good notes on saving electricity, and yes most times when we leave lights on it's not on purpose, but we can always do better. One of the best ways to really save electricity around your house is to get solar panels. Solar panels help reduce roughly about 70 percent of electricity loss. While saving electricity solar panels also reduce your electric bills as a bonus. Although getting solar panels can be a tad bit expensive its a good investment for saving money and electricity.

When you leave your electronics plugged in when they are charged, lights on overnight, or water running when you brush your teeth you can actually be a big contributor to global climate change. Coal supplies 57 percent of the total energy harnessed to generate electricity and approximately 86 percent of all coal consumed in the United States is used for electricity generation. Since the biggest contributors of greenhouse gasses are burning fossil fuel, electricity usage is definitely a big cause of greenhouse gas emissions.

I definitely agree with all of the things being said here. Doing things like not leaving the lights on in your bedroom, not leaving the water running while brushing your teeth, unplugging things that are not being used are all very simple ways to save energy and help the environment. One thing I would add it showering or bathing time. Showers and baths use vast amounts of energy, so cutting down on time spent taking them would help save quite a bit of energy within your household.
