Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Electricity

Electricity is probably the one thing humans can control the most. We tend to leave lights on throughout the day. Sometimes people do it for security reasons, like leaving the lights on when people go out. Other times people are scared of the dark so they leave the lights on. Electricity is a privilege that some people take advantage of. We could stop this by doing the little things. Some examples are turning of the lights when going to bed, leaving lights off during the day while opening windows, changing your light bulbs, etc. If we make changes our future could be very bright smile

I agree, but there are also some things you can do to lower emissions if you do like to leave lights on. Different bulbs will produce more light for less energy like incandescent vs led lights. While incandescent lights are cheaper they use 90% of there energy just producing heat while only 10% is used for light. While led and fluorescent lights flip those numbers around. Switching to led bulbs could be the best option, they last up to 25 years and can cut energy cost for lighting
in half. "Energy costs for the LED added up to $30 over the bulb's 22-year lifespan. Energy costs for using an incandescent bulb over that same period added up to
$165." If your someone who does leave their lights on for a reason, why not head towards the eco friendly options!
