Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

I'm a French student at Alain Chartier high school in France. I have compared my results with Amrican students' (Bishop O'Dowd, Oakland, CA, USA) and I have noticed than mine are lower than theirs. For exemple, their footprint carbon in transportation (8191kg) and home energy (4233kg) are very higher than our school (transportation: 2493kg ; home energy: 2146kg). I think they take a lot of planes in USA and are less environmentally friendly than us. This is just a guess. However we have approximately the same result for food and purchases. They have a total of 16295 kg carbon footprint and we have "only" 8163 kg, the half !
