Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint
Before I calculated my carbon footprint, I thought it would be average, as my family generally tries to be conscious of things such as how often we are using the heating and electricity in our house. However, last year we did some major traveling, both in the states and in Europe, so my footprint was far larger than I expected, as I wasn't thinking about how much of an impact trips by plane would have. Though I do not intend to stop traveling, there are things that can be done once I reach my destination to lessen my carbon footprint. I can try to take public transportation whenever possible. It is far more environmentally friendly and is good for the economy. In addition, walking is a great way to get around, as it uses no carbon, is good exercise, and allows you to observe your surroundings better. Though I already do these things when I travel, I think I can be even better about it and do more of it going forward.
These all sound like good ideas, Mia! Also, you can think of the other aspects of your life as well, such as diet or home heating/cooling, where you might be able to make changes to "offset" your travel footprint.
Thank you for your comment, Jason. I agree that diet and energy use within the home are both great factors that go into one's carbon footprint. With food, my family tries to consume as little red meat as possible, as we know how devastating the processes of raising larger animals can be. However, I think I should encourage my relatives to go vegetarian whenever possible, as that is the healthiest option for both the body and for the planet. In addition, I will also suggest we cut back more on the heating of our home during the winter months.
I am in a similar situation, Mia. I expected that my carbon emissions would be about average, but the airplane trips I took added a great deal to my footprint. I also enjoy traveling and would not want to cut that out of my life, and I think you bring up some great points in terms of being conscious of your impact. I agree that taking public transportation as well as walking, is not only helpful to the environment but is also beneficial and enjoyable. I guess you could say that by walking to your destinations you are enjoying the nature that you are preserving, by traveling by foot rather than by car or bus. ![]()
I thought mine would be a bit below average because I didn't think about how everything I did matters. I was pretty surprised with my results because they were a lot more than I expected. Mostly because of how much I go places.
I was thinking the same about where people live. Not just what region or country but how close you live to your school or friends can have a big effect. I never really thought about how much I was going place to place till now.
I agree because the scores we have are similar and also because ours are both caused by the same things.
