Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Best way to travel?

justintan999

As most of us know, traveling via airplane greatly impacts our carbon footprints. Should we try and reduce the number of flights we take each year or fly whenever we feel like we have to?

Most people fly when they travel instead of driving. I am wondering what would be better, driving or flying. I understand there are many variables that can factor into this problem but I feel like the main ones are time and the amount of carbon emitted.. If you are making a shorter trip, for example, NorCal (Northern California) to SoCal (Southern California), driving seems like the most appropriate option. It does not take as much carbon and only takes six hours. The real question boils down to long distance traveling. How should we travel from the west coast to the east coast? Personally, I would prefer to take an airplane because of the time factor. It is a lot quicker to fly across the country rather than drive. However, flying emits a lot of carbon into the air while drivi ng may not. These are some of the main factors that I could think of, but I'm curious on what other people would choose and why: time or the amount of carbon emitted?
