Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Resourcefulness is Huge

Resourcefulness is big word when it comes to lowering your overall Carbon footprint. Not having your lights not on all the time and leaving your water flowing to a minimum is a good step towards change but what else could you do? Transportation usually takes a incredibly massive chunk out of your overall carbon footprint. Biking to places and going on less planes is a great way to lower ones blueprint. Eating a more “green” diet and consuming less products also allows you to decrease this footprint.

As I already stated in “Transportation is death” the numbers due to transportation are insanely high but this is not the only factor contributing to our downfall in creating a “happy healthy earth”. According to Earth on the Edge the average US citizen produces 2 tons of carbon by buying things a year. Being more resourceful with the things you buy can also reduce your overall carbon footprint.

How to Lower the Amount of Carbon Dioxide Being Emitted
The amount of carbon dioxide being emitted into the world is a large amount, and there are many ways we can help lower it. Carbon dioxide is actually a gas that we need, but since there is so much being put into the world, it has increased temperatures and led to natural disasters. The more greenhouse gasses there are, the more heat this planet will receive. As Bill Nye stated in his video, Climate 101, “But, if we produce an excess of these gasses [CO2 and methane], as we have, the temperature rises, as it has.” Since too much of these gasses have been emitted into the atmosphere, we have to try to reduce the amount of CO2 we are producing daily.
A few of the many ways that we can reduce the amount of CO2 being produced in our daily lives is by carpooling with friends and neighbors to and from school, turning the lights off whenever possible, and to eat as much locally as much as possible. Carpooling with a neighbor or friend is a simple way to lessen your carbon footprint and reduce the amount of CO2 b eing emitted into the atmosphere. Schools could promote carpooling by having a bulletin board which connects students with others who need rides in the mornings or afternoons. Turning the lights off whenever possible is another very important way to reduce the amount of CO2 you are producing, because all of the energy being used for the light is being turned into carbon dioxide, and adding to the amount of CO2 already being emitted into the atmosphere. Finally, another way to help lower the amount of CO2 being produced is to buy as much fresh and local produce as possible. Fresh, local produce uses less CO2 while being grown, and this will also greatly affect the amount of CO2 being secreted. Another way you can help reduce the amount of carbon dioxide being produced is to grow your own produce. If every house in a neighborhood had fruit trees and a small vegetable plot, many trips to the grocery store could be avoided. This not only eliminates the fossil fuels generated from transportation from grocery stores, and greenhouse gasses are no longer an issue. By doing these simple tasks, you are decreasing the amount of CO2 being transmitted into our world.
