Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Our actions have a far greater impact than we realize

AndreeaD

When I started to calculate my carbon footprint I was convinced that the result is not going to be such a harmful one for the nature ;I even dared to predict that it would be about the same as the average person in my country, presumption that finally proved to be wrong. I've got 5891 of CO2 per year , with 1321 kgs more than the average value  in Romania  ,the category that influenced my result the most being ,,Home" with 4013 kgs , compared to 1753 kgs in my region. I have never realised how much artificial light and electricity we use with all of those electronics and household appliances, not to mention my showers where  there is a huge waste of water.
This made me to understand that what's the most alarming ,from my point of view, is that humans do actions that, in their conception , have no damaging impact on the environment. So, in this case, where we are not aware of the effects of our daily activities , how can we actually change something? In order to find solutions  , we should firstly try to assume our guilt and comprehend that we hurt Mother Nature mo re than we thank for everything she offers to us. Let's save her before it's too late, before life on Earth will no longer be possible due to our awful actions, which sometimes are more like whims, than like real needs.
I, personally, will start by unplugging my phone and laptop when the battery no longer needs to be charged , I'll definitely stop wasting water by reducing the time of my showers and finally I'll take more advantage of the natural light in order to avoid keeping the artificial lights on for too long.I know these might not help to reduce the CO2 emission on a global level, but every great achievement begins with little steps.
