Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Lifestyle and Footprints

This exercise brought to my attention my lifestyle choices and how this affects my carbon footprint.  So many choices of convenience carry a heavy weight as it relates to climate change and the health of the environment.  My use of plastic water bottles, technology and travel contributed most to the size of my footprint.  We have a responsibility to help heal the environment. I will be more aware of how my choices are impacting the environment and how I can  make changes to create a smaller footprint.

I totally agree. This exercise does bring you to realize what you are doing to the environment. I would have never realized I contributed to polluting the environment this much. It makes you much more conciseness about how we live our lives and how to make our communities and households more green. When I was filling out all the questions I thought of things I have not really though of such as that since I travel far to school I'm a major contributor to the global warming problem. Seeing the damage my family and I created really motivated me and my family to become a more green household.

I agree with both of you. Even though my footprint was not extremely large, it is still greater than many other countries' averages. I have definitely become more aware of ways I can reduce my footprint easily like taking shorter showers, using reusable bags, recycling, carpooling, and walking/riding a bike as often as I can. I am also working on reducing the amount of time I use electronics. This excise was truly eye-opening for me.

I agree with your opinions about how this project really changes the way you think about your lifestyle. Before the carbon footprint project, I never cared if I let the lights or fan on in my room or if I used a plastic water bottle. Now that I know the impact of my actions overtime, I pay more attention to the possible repercussions of my actions. I have started to use reusable water bottles everyday and to turn off the lights in my house before I leave. Even though the changes I am making are small, I think they can have a big difference on my personal carbon footprint.

Everything said in this post is very true.  I was aware that my carbon footprint was likely larger than the average person's footprint because of what a privileged life I live.  However, I would have never thought my transportation had such a huge impact on the environment.  Because I am not completely independent, I am not fully responsible for the eight flights I have taken in the past year, or the distance I have to travel to get to school everyday.  However there are several measures I can and do take to reduce my negative impact on the environment in other aspects of my life.
