Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.
Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?
Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Student footprint (Ghana)
It can be noticed that the mean of the footprints is lower in Europe compared to the mean in Africa and America. The main reason this could be true is because people living in Africa might travel more during holidays and so flights would add up to the total footprints. When I lived in Europe the government made us separate plastic waste so that it could be recycled. This really reduced my total footprint. But in Ghana, where I live now, I don't separate plastic and that increases my total footprint.
Very true, in America we don't recycle that much because people don't care enough to think about it. If we could all think about using a little less and recycling a little more then the whole planet would benefit from that. I have never lived in another country besides the United States, but I can tell that the amount of carbon I am outputting here is more than someone else in Europe.
What you also said about traveling and flights is very true. When I put down that I had only flown on 2 airplanes n the last year, my transportation footprint skyrocketed. I was astonished, because it was only two flights! By limiting the amount of long distance transportation we use, like you said, we can decrease our footprints.
I kindly disagree mija, since that is one of the many four bad things that produce Co2. You have to consider thinking about other reasons, such as the food there is very low they aren't going to waist any since they need it. I do see your point though, however traveling is only one aspect think about how much electricity they use or how much lights usage they have of light, just think...
I have to agree with noahm2 because my family an i only be things that have been made out of recycled materials.
I live in America and my family flies everywhere, Averaging about 6 flights a year. Plus we all drive trucks, which produces a lot of Co2.
I agree with both what noahm2 and neils1 stated about the major way that us Americans send out CO2 emissions. Most Americans think that recycling is just putting paper and cardboard in recycle bins. Although that is a good start for lowering our footprint, there are so many other ways we can help such as traveling less if possible and using transportation that uses less CO2/safer for the environment.
In US we are finally thinking about how our actions are affecting the environment. There is an increasing number of people replacing cars powered by gas by hybrids. Also, there are many people using solar power.
However, like Rebecca S Ghana stated about the large number of plane travelers in Africa, there are also many in the US, increasing the carbon footprint. And despite the rising number of hybrids and solar users, people in the US have more cars and the average number of people per household in lower than many other countries. The more houses and cars there are, the more CO2 emissions.
I agree fully with you that flying and transportation causes a lot more carbon to be emitted into the atmosphere. I noticed this first hand from all the flights I took this year, it ran up my total carbon foot print by thousands. It is interesting how Europe makes people separate plastic and do recycling, I would like to know more about that.
America does have a larger average footprint compared to the rest of the world. It is crazy how small things can really affect your overall footprint.
In mooresville we travel a lot in cars and planes so it really increases our carbon footprint /Becca Mooresville.
Recycling is the key to reducing the amount of carbon we create.
I think its interesting that you travel a lot. My transportation was actually very low.
