Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Planes (Efficiency )

Skyemcd

I think that the reason planes emit so much of a carbon footprint is because it isn't profitable to make planes good for the environment. If we made it profitable (thru legislation ) to use renewable energy on planes then we could decrease our carbon footprint. I think this is a good idea because flying is an important part of how connected our world is.

katems

i agree, but we would need a lot of energy to fly some places, and to create all that energy the companies would most likely use fossil fuels

Skyemcd

Yeah but what if we made fossil fuels illegal.

katems

black market

gardensnakejake

That would put the world's economy into a fuel crisis, my dude. The price of fuel would be jacked up causing a worldwide fuel cartel.

youngfish01

i agree with you also because planes need a lot of energy to fly but its also really bad for the environment

katems

besides how are the poorer countries supposed to get money for expensive electricity?

Skyemcd

Maybe not 100% illegal but uneconomical

fre5h_b0i

I think planes are a very good way to fly but they also are destroying our atmosphere more and more every day and I cannot stand for that which is why i promise to only fly when I have enough money and can afford it.

katems

w could get rid of power all together, go bak to the good old days

thejesus27

But that would reduce our efficiency in many other things

fre5h_b0i

Yeah boi

timmyr

I have to disagree with you Skye because I know that Boeing is working on making planes more fuel efficient by finding fuel that emits less carbon and other gasses that are potentially dangerous. Also by making more flexible wings that curve upwards helps make planes more fuel efficient. You might not notice but when you are on a plane, notice how the wings are angled. That angle makes planes more fuel efficient and being more fuel efficient reduces the the amount of gasoline that flies the plane, which reduces the of carbon emissions.

dmnicolella

maybe we could make planes that run on some sort of renewable fuel like ethenol

alexmar1234

planes could definitely be more efficient and i think the would help a lot

samshultz

Read about Trump's campagin plane, and look how much it was bad for the earth. But he hot elected so, yeah. I mean, he did something right.

fre5h_b0i

Maybe if we found some other way to fly that didn't involve planes, helicopters, ect. then we could have all sorts of weird fun and not destroy out planet boi.

rolands

I have an obligation to disagree, if planes were more fuel efficient they would spend less on fuel which has an immediate impact on profits. As such it is incredibly likely that Boeing and other manufacturers are researching such technologies.

fre5h_b0i

Maybe we should find some way to do a human powered plane, like a bike-plan combination. this way, we would power it, and there would be no need for light, wind or any other kind of power.

fre5h_b0i

I just realized how dumb that sounds...I meant more like a plane where we pedal on a little bike style generator when we're on the ground to power a little battery that supports us in flight.

hodin

I once heard about doing something like this in fitness centers.  I mean- you have thousands of people a week walking up and down on treadmills, biking on a stationary bike, lifting weights, and where is all that energy going?  At the very least, every 24 hr fitness center should be powered by the members exercising!  And here's an idea: you get a discount on your membership the more power you provide, because you're saving on the electricity bills..

But I like your idea.  A bunch of people sitting around in the waiting area before a flight doing nothing so that they can line up and go sit in a flying box for 4 hours.  Provide a few stationary bikes in the waiting area.

dmnicolella

actually human powered aircraft exist and its pretty much what you said. you basically sit on a little bike and when you pedal it spins a propeller and moves the plane forward.

samarabunn-hartman

That is a really good idea Jason Hodin. That would save so much electricity! Where else could we do that?

solomons

The problem with purely human powered aircraft right now is that they are only really built for one passenger and can't go the distances commercial fuel powered airplanes can.
