Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Comparing Footprints

slomec15

I'm a student from Oakland, California (US). I looked into the world map and was comparing different high schools from across the world on our footprints. I took my school, Bishop O'dowd, who has a total footprint of 16295 kg, a high school in Guatemala who had a total footprint of 17347 kg and a school in Taiwan who had a total footprint of 10400 kg. The thing that made me want more details/ information was the fact that the school in Guatemala had a higher total footprint than my school, yet only had a higher footprint in transportation (10758 kg vs our 8191 kg). I then compared the school in Guatemala and Taiwan and the difference between their carbon footprints (6,947 kg) is only different because of the transportation. It makes me wonder why the footprint for transportation in Guatemala is so high?

Hi Charlotte, I think it has to do with the fact that this school in Guatemala is an “American School” – so probably includes the children of many foreigners and diplomats, people who fly a lot. We would love to also have more participants from more “typical” schools in poorer countries, but many such schools don't have very good computer/web access, for example.

Thanks for the response! That would be really cool to be able to compare our footprints with the schools like ours from other parts of the world!

Hi this is really amazing and I think that the numbers in Guatemala are really high wow!, compared to us in Iceland! The number wich we have is around 7.9 tons! I by the way had around 11 tons! It's really high and I think that I misunderstood some of the questions. But either way this is my number and I would just like Charlotte to compare with schools from other country's.
