Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

My Carbon Footprint - MHS, USA

taylor_rumrill

Hi, my name is Taylor and I am 16 years old. My total carbon footprint was 14744 kgs (Transportation: 5904 kgs, Home: 6003 kgs, Food: 2004 kgs, Purchases: 833 kgs). My family goes on vacation a lot and we used to drive to visit family that was over 900 miles one way. Since we moved, our new house has central heat and air, something we didn't have before, so I had to estimate how many months we would use air conditioning and heating. We also use ceiling fans year round in our rooms because I like the cool air while I sleep. The average in my region is 15,918. Mine is below that so that is good. Generally, other people around the world have a range of carbon footprints that are higher than mine and lower than mine.

We can use less fossil fuels, less electricity, and reduce, reuse, recycle.

I also think we should use less fossil fuels, less electricity, and reduce, reuse, and recycle, but it is okay to have a lower carbon footprint, it is better than having a higher one so you don't causing more pollution, and harmful fossil fuels.

Try not to travel as much and try to turn off the light when you don"t need them

Using the fans in your home are way better than using the air conditions so that is a plus but just always conserving energy will deacrease your carbon.

Fans are good to use, they are way better then central air!

I went on many vacations this summer, so my transportation was upwards of 20,000, so mine was above average!

My home footprint was much lower than yours; this could be because we don't really use AC during the warmer months, but rather, we try to minimize its use.
