Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

The Deforestation Crisis

hilldanasusabod1sr

Deforestation is unacceptable because the main method to clear forests includes burning the zone of land. When you do this,  you remove natural oxygen providers such as trees and other plants.  Plants are known to reduce the level of greenhouse gases, so it is unfortunate that the process includes burning them down. When you burn them down, it releases even more CO2 into the air since fossil fuels are being emitted into the atmosphere. Not only are we causing a greenhouse gas problem but we are ruining habitats that belong to organisms. Even though it is difficult to put an end to this worldwide crisis, we can start at our own homes by planting trees, recycling, eating vegetarian meals, and reducing our use of paper.

I agree with you Hilly, cutting down trees is a terrible idea. If we tear down trees, it will hurt our environment even more. Buring things release fossil fuels, so burning trees that will provide us with getting rid of CO2 is not smart. While I was at the park the other day, lots of trees were marked to be cut down and I thought they shouldn't cut down trees that are healthy just so that they can build houses. Trees can help us more than a new set of McMansions can.

Hilly, I totally agree that deforestation is a terrible phenomenon that is common in our world today. But, I know there are many ways that we can preserve the environment and help stop this unfortunate crisis like you said. Of course, vegetarianism would be a major factor that would contribute to a healthier, sustainable environment, however, it will be sort of a challenge to turn the whole world vegetarian and or vegan. Despite this, we can still make sure that the utensils and plates that we are using are eco-friendly and made from plants. This would have the same effect that vegetarianism would have.
