Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Plastic Bag ban in Alameda County, California

Byles21

In Alameda County, California there is bag ban prohibiting the use of single use plastic bags in all retail stores. There's been a bag ban on grocery stores and other food establishments since 2013, but on May 1st, 2017 that bag ban opened up to include all retail stores in Alameda county. I believe that this was a step in the right direction to help prevent trash from entering our oceans and ecosystems, and ultimately, to help prevent global warming. The prohibited product, single use plastic bags, according to http://reusablebagsac.org/, "are one of the the most common litter items found in our watershed." Not only is this a huge issue, but plastic bags don't decompose and cause issues in the digestive tracks of animals. We can eradicate this problem by encouraging our local government to prohibit single-use plastic bags. We can also make an impact by using reusable bags when we go shopping!

I think the plastic bag ban is for the better because plastic bags are not good for the environment. Since plastic does not decompose, it poses a major threat to animals who might eat it and die. As http://www.healthguidance.org/entry/149 … t.htmlsays "The environmental balance of the waterways is being thrown off by the rate of plastic bags finding their way into the mouths and intestinal tracts of sea mammals." Plastic bags are slowly but surely becoming a major pollutant in our environments. That is why it is so important that people bring their own reusable bags when they are shopping.
