Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Reducing My Carbon Footprint

georgia_bunkers8

I expected my carbon footprint to be about average, but it was a lot higher than expected. I want to reduce my carbon footprint to help the environment. One of the main reasons my carbon footprint is so high is because of the transportation I use. A typical passenger vehicle produces around 4.6 metric tons of carbon dioxide per year. We can all reduce that number by driving fuel-based cars less. Instead of taking a car with just me to school everyday, I could carpool with others or take the bus. Transportation is a big contributor towards CO2 emission. I know that carpooling and taking public transportation will not solve all our CO2 problems, but it will definitely make a difference. Yes this notion of reducing CO2 emitting transportation is often repeated, but I think it cannot be stressed enough. Another aspect of my carbon footprint was lighting used in my house. LED bulbs help reduce CO2 emission. LED bulbs use 40% less power than fluorescent light bulbs. I hope to convert more of my home lighting to LED light bulbs. Basically, by reducing actions that emit lots of  CO2, I can cut down my carbon footprint.
