Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Local and Organic

PCaroline

Eating foods that are locally grown or organic near your home can provide a huge impact for the reduction of CO2. There are many negative affects of receiving food from very far places. These foods had to get to where they are in the store from cars, ships, planes and many other forms of transportation. Imagine how much carbon that emits into the air just from one trip. However, food production travels everyday and everyday that is more carbon into the air. Even growing a garden in your backyard is a big step to help reduce your personal carbon footprint. Also, when getting or growing food at a local farm, the environmental cost is significantly reduced. Not only does growing food in local farms reduce CO2, but small farms tend to adopt beneficial soil care practices. In addition, eating local food helps your local economy and promotes food security.  Another reason to eat food that is organically or locally grown is because on larger farms there is more pesticide s and toxins used, which is harmful to one's health. Overall, whether it is eating food from your own garden or eating food locally grown, how you manage where you eat your food influences your carbon footprint.
